Details of the Case

Anand was found to have submitted fake documents as part of his application to Lehigh University for the 2023-2024 academic year. The fraudulent actions included:

  • Falsified Documents: Anand created and submitted fake admission and financial aid documents. Notably, he fabricated a death certificate for his father to obtain additional financial aid and altered tax records and academic transcripts.
  • Fake Email Address: He also used a counterfeit email address that mimicked an official school principal’s email to add legitimacy to his application.
  • Social Media Revelation: The scheme came to light after Anand shared details of his fraudulent activities on Reddit. A post by Anand under the username u/transportationOK4728, which described his actions, was flagged and led to an investigation by Lehigh University.

Legal Proceedings

Anand was arraigned on June 12, with bail set at $25,000. He pleaded guilty to one count of forgery. The plea deal resulted in the following terms:

  • Sentence: Anand was sentenced to one to three months in Northampton County Prison, which amounted to a time-served sentence.
  • Return to India: As part of the plea agreement, Anand is required to return to India. Lehigh University decided not to seek restitution for the $85,000 involved.
  • Custody of ICE: Anand was released into the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for deportation.

Conclusion

The case against Aryan Anand highlights issues related to academic fraud and the legal consequences of falsifying information for university admissions. It underscores the importance of accurate documentation in the admissions process and serves as a reminder of the legal risks associated with fraudulent activities.
